A vision for better government
Our models for government aren’t working. To make governments more effective and legitimate, we need to do more than simply change processes and practices.
A new approach to government built on three core beliefs
Embrace complexity
Most of the challenges we face as a society are complex. They involve lots of people and problems, and they’re constantly changing.
Build relationships
Good relationships are vital for working in complexity. Governments should trust people, share power and support each other to make the best decisions.
Learn constantly
Because change is constant, and we all make mistakes, it’s important that governments learn and adapt.
What does this mean in practice?
- Share power with those best placed to act.
- Think systemically, act locally.
- Challenge unnecessary hierarchy and collaborate across boundaries.
- Seek out strengths and build on them.
- Champion the voices of those who are heard the least.
- Optimise for learning rather than control.
