Social Imagination

Social imagination is the practice of getting together and imagining new ways of being and doing. It’s about society, the people in it, and the norms, rules, and scripts that govern our actions in the world.

We are currently experiencing a crisis of imagination, exacerbated by our context: stress, trauma, fear, and scarcity all undermine our ability to be creative and source creative solutions. This crisis of imagination seeds a crisis of action.

Social imagination in Southbank, Melbourne

In 2023, the Centre for Public Impact in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand (ANZ) ran a social imagination project.

Funded by the Centre for Public Impact’s Climate Change Initiative, we convened people who live or work in Southbank to reimagine how we might collectively tackle the climate crisis.

Despite being the most densely populated suburb of Melbourne, home to a rich hospitality sector and one of Australia’s most vibrant arts precincts, Southbank is often reported to be a place where people feel disconnected and lonely.

So, we designed a five-day workshop series to help build a greater sense of belonging and community in Southbank. Through this, we want to create a sense of agency and imagination, equipping Southbankers with the power to act together.
